Every webmaster is proud of their own little corner of the net!

Old sites, especially the ones that gained popularity and experience during the years, used to offer some sort of very subjective "review service" for fellow site owners. If a page managed to satisfy their standards, they'd win an award! Awards being usually small pictures of congratulations which linked back to the original reviewer. Although simple, webmasters used to go crazy for them! This inspired a lot of poeple to get better in coding or frontend styling in order to collect as many awards as possible. Even today some Neocities users offer an award service.

Topsites are similar to awards, but also feature a public ranking in which net visitors can also vote for their favourites.
